Street Art in Rome

Ancient, Modern and Contemporary Rome: beauty and art from past to present melt together in something unexpected and beautiful.

Among the several things you can visit in Rome there is also a surprising and amusing part of contemporary. That kind of art that gets out of museums and chooses town’s walls itself as canvas, becoming an integral part of it: Street Art! In Ostiense, a young and dynamic district used as a set for films and serials and filled with trendy bars, his folk architecture of 1900s becomes ideal backdrop for graffiti giving a new face to the city. Carrying on Via Ostiense you get to Rome’s biggest industrial archeology site: Montemartini’s plant. It was built in 1912 to be a thermoelectric plant and it worked till 1963 when it was totally abandoned. After restoration it was open again to the public in 1995. Its huge boilers and large rooms, once bustled with workers and engineers, have been successfully used as scenery for more than 400 ancient Roman statues! It’s hard to imagine foggy and noisy places as the ideal habitat for ancient beauty. Instead, huge essential modern structures seem to enhance grace and beauty of ancient statues in a new enthralling emotional atmosphere. Seeing is believing!

We had two tours with RomeByLocals. Both were extraordinary. We did a tour of the Vatican with the Sistine Chapel (Alessandra) and a tour of the Borghese Gallery and Museum (Chiara). Both guides were very informative and well prepared for questions. They each had additional background information – both text and pictures. I had some physical limitations and both were very helpful and compassionate. A private tour is definitely the way to go. It was geared to our specific interests and at a pace that worked for us. Emanuele runs a thoroughly professional tour group – detailed information, transportation if needed, great communication and just a generally, kind person. He went out of his way to solve my transportation issues, and was cheerful. I can’t wait to go to Rome again and RomeByLocals will be the one I call.
